Get Involved
You may have heard UNAC leadership’s refrain: “YOU are the union,” and it’s true. You – each of our bargaining unit members – are the union! To make this union as strong as possible, individual involvement from as many bargaining unit members as possible is essential. Getting involved doesn’t have to be a time-consuming endeavor for it to be effective and worthwhile.
A few ways you can get involved:
- Make sure you’re paying UNAC dues
- Read UNAC newsletters and other emailed communications
- Show up to UNAC actions when you’re available
- Join a UNAC committee
- Run for a UNAC officer position
- Run for a UNAC Representative Assembly seat
- Be a department/program liaison
- Show up for UNAC’s virtual and in-person meetings and events
- Use one of UNAC’s background images and profile pictures for your UA Zoom account
- Hang one of our door signs on your office door
Department/Program Liaisons
Becoming a UNAC Liaison is a perfect place to start getting more involved with your union! UNAC Liaisons are crucial to effective communication within United Academics.
Liaisons act as a conduit of information between your union’s leadership and faculty/post-docs in your department or program. When UNAC leadership or office staff need to get out a message, liaisons help distribute the information. When there’s a problem or question within your department or program, liaisons bring it to the attention of UNAC leadership and office staff. Liaisons are often the missing piece in our communication structure, and building this system will help ensure that no one is left out of the loop and no one is taken advantage of.
Here are a few things liaisons might do:
- Announce a union survey, social event, or call to action during good-of-the-order at the end of your department/program meetings
- Send an email to department/program colleagues to announce a union survey, social event, or call to action
- Pass out flyers provided by your union office or Org VP
- Connect your department/program colleagues with your union leadership or office staff as needed
