About UNAC:
University of Alaska United Academics Union
United Academics (UNAC) is a democratic union composed of approximately 1,100 University of Alaska faculty members and post-doctoral fellows.
We exist as a union because our members deserve competitive compensation and a safe and positive work environment. These goals are fought for through contract negotiations and sustained through contract enforcement. UNAC’s leadership depends on rank and file UNAC membership to guide our negotiation and enforcement priorities. Rank-and-file support and solidarity is essential to UNAC leadership’s success in fighting to improve our CBA protections and enforce current rules.
None of the work United Academics leadership and staff do would be possible without our dues paying members. Our union is funded solely by member dues, which our finance committee and elected Treasurer ensure are used wisely.
While paying dues is officially optional, and UNAC honors its duty of fair representation to all bargaining unit members, United Academics would not exist as a union without our dues payers, and all UA workers – including UNAC’s non-dues payers – would be worse

UNAC Structure
- Our Executive Board (E-Board) – 7 elected faculty or post-doc officers
- Our Representative Assembly (RA) – 24 elected faculty or post-doc members apportioned between UA’s MAUs and extended sites. UNAC’s officers are also considered members of the RA.
- Our committees – all dues-paying members are encouraged to participate in UNAC committee work. Our committees elect new leaders, determine bargaining priorities, engage with membership, communicate with legislators, and safeguard member dues through a responsible budget. Each committee’s charge is detailed in our Constitution and By-Laws.
- Our two full time staff members oversee daily union operations and ensure UA management complies with our contract. These staff positions are:
Contract Manager – leads grievances, assists in individual member investigations and other individual issues, advises members in 1-1 settings, participates in negotiations, and more (email: contract@unac4996ak.com)
Organizing Manager – leads communication and organizing efforts, assists UNAC committees and leadership, tracks membership trends, helps to grow membership, and more (email: membership@unac4996ak.com)
Our union’s purpose is to protect our bargaining unit’s workplace rights and compensation through collective power. UNAC’s elected leadership and staff works hard to enforce the CBA and assist members, but the union’s real power comes from our rank-and-file members.
UA faculty and post docs ARE our union!
